PE&G attorney authors article on trademark and branding issues in the NBA
April 18, 2014 – Partner Cari Cohorn co-authored an analysis of efforts to capitalize on the catchphrase "Full Squad" coined by David Lee of the Golden State Warriors. After Lee touted the strength of the Warriors' defense when the "Full Squad" was in the lineup, the catchphrase flooded social media. Then came the race to register the phrase as a trademark and proposals for ways in which the Warriors and Lee could, together, exploit the phrase to build their respective brands. The latter efforts were quickly abandoned, as the NBA's collective bargaining agreement prohibits teams from participating in any "investment or business opportunity" with a player. The article appeared in today's Sports Litigation Alert.
